Blakehurst vets at your serviceHealth check A regular check-up is just as important for your pet as it is for you. A thorough health exam for your pet at least once a year allows us to develop a picture of your pet's overall health and helps identify any potential health issues. VaccinationsVaccines play a vital role in keeping pets healthy, but not every furry companion needs the same treatment of vaccinations. Our vets can advise on the most appropriate vaccination regime for your furry friend. Flea and parasite controlSome may believe that fleas and parasites haunt our pets only in the summer months. It's true that fleas multiply faster in summer, but they are actually present all year. To keep your pet comfortable, effective year 'round flea treatment is recommended. Ask our staff which of the many flea treatments is right for your companion. We stock only the most effective treatments, most of which require one monthly application. HeartwormGone are the days of daily tablets to keep the deadly heartworm at bay. Heartworm treatments have come a long way in recent times and we can now prevent heartworm with a once a year injection. Dental careHealthy teeth equals a healthy body as infections in the mouth can spread to any organ in the body. Your pet's teeth will be inspected with an annual health check and some animals may need a yearly scale and polish under a general anaesthetic. Nutrition adviceLike humans, pets are what they eat and not all pet food is of equal nutritional value. Drop in and see our friendly staff who can advise you on the best diet for your pet. We stock a wide range of premium dog and cat food as well as prescription food for specific health needs. AccessoriesWe stock a range of leads, collars, bling, name tags and fashion accessories for dogs and cats along with a variety of medicated and non-medicated shampoos and conditioners. Blood work and fluid analysisUsing an on-site laboratory, we perform some diagnostic tests while-you-wait. If a sample does need to be sent away, results are usually available within 24 hours. Once the results are in, you'll have the opportunity to discuss them with one of our vets so that you understand what they mean and what needs to be done. On-site testingIn addition to blood and fluid analysis, we are equipped to perform faecal examinations, cytology, and external parasite evaluation and bacteriological analysis from skin and ear scrapings. Radiography and ultrasonographyWith an up-to-date radiograph processor, we perform x-rays while you wait. We also have access to a visiting ultrasonographer (ultrasound professional). SurgeryThe idea of surgical procedures can be stressful for pet owners and at Blakehurst Vets, we take the time to help you reach the decision about whether to go-ahead with surgery for your animal friend. If surgery is required, our professional surgical team issues your pet with an intravenous line that allows the vet to safely administer medications, including an anaesthetic calculated on your pet's weight and medical condition. Just like a human surgeon, the veterinary surgeon operates within a sterile field. Our anaesthetic monitoring machine runs continuous ECG, pulse oximetry and respiratory rate measurements. A trained veterinary nurse monitors your pet at all times and stays with them until they are completely awake. Chemotherapy With the very mention of chemotherapy, many owners fear their pets might endure severe side effects from treatment. Side effects in pets do occur but are usually less severe than those in humans and treatment is usually only administered to pets when the cancer in question has a high probability of responding to treatment. Dr Hamish Bathgate is experienced in diagnosing and treating cancer patients on-site. Importantly, patients receiving chemotherapy are given 24 hour access to our senior vet. |
